Department of Automobile Engineering (FET)

About Automobile Department

The Indian Auto Industry is one of the largest globally, with an annual production of 30.91 million vehicles in FY 2018-19, following a growth of 6.26 percent over the last year. The automobile industry accounts for 7.1 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). India is also a prominent auto exporter and has strong export growth expectations for the near future. Around 31 percent of small cars sold globally are manufactured in India. Several initiatives by the Government of India and the major automobile players in the Indian market are expected to make India a leader in the Two-Wheeler and Four-Wheeler markets in the world by 2020. The Government of India aims to make automobile manufacturing the main driver of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, as it expects the passenger vehicle market to triple to 9.4 million units by 2026, as highlighted in the Auto Mission Plan (AMP) 2016-26.

Today Government policies are providing a significant thrust to electric vehicles for less dependence on conventional fuels, BS-VI vehicles for a cleaner environment, and autonomous vehicles in the foreseeable future. These needs will create a demand for automobile engineers, experts, and researchers that the Automobile Engineering department aims to fulfill.

The Department of Automobile Engineering was established in 2009. It was created to provide specialized knowledge and skills to students to contribute to the Automobile sector. This objective is fulfilled by the highly qualified and experienced faculty having M.Tech / Ph.D. degrees. The faculty members of the department have been actively involved in Research and Development activities in alternative fuels, heat transfer, new engine development, vibration analysis in vehicles, electric and hybrid vehicle technologies etc. They had published their work in renowned National and International Journals conferences and filed patents in their area of research.

The department has well-developed up-to-date laboratory facilities. The students are exposed to various relevant topics like design of automobile components (both manual and computer-aided), types of fuels used in automobiles with their property analysis, different types of energy losses in the vehicle, latest technology and standards used in engine design and manufacturing, air conditioning in the automobiles, dynamics of motor vehicles, vibration analysis, Electric, and hybrid vehicle technology, autonomous vehicles, vehicle maintenance and auto electrical and electronics. Software such as ProE, MATLAB, and ANSYS are being taught on workstations to design and develop vehicles.

MRIIRS, in association with Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Private Limited (HMSI), has established Automotive Training & Research Centre at the University campus to impart high-end skills required in Auto Sector for its students. In this association, HMSI will provide technical support on frequently changing technological advancements in the two-wheeler industry.
