FAQs – Media Studies & Humanities

Faculty of Media Studies & Humanities is a leading and important constituent of Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies (formerly MRIU), a  NAAC accredited university with ‘A’ rank. And this is a matter of great pride for students and teachers alike. The Faculty comprises two departments, namely Department of Journalism & Mass Communication and Department of English. Faculty of Media Studies and Humanities (FMeH) aims at imparting quality education in order to cater to the increasing demands of the industry. At FMeH, we take up challenges that come with the existing as well as emerging corporate environments. The core strength of FMeH lies in the harmony among all its stakeholders: Students, Faculty, Staff and Management. It is our firm faith that value based learning can transform a student into an efficient professional and a responsible citizen.

1.DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION:

Q-1 What all programs does Department of J & MC offer?

Ans. Department of J&MC offers programs at UG & PG level in Journalism and Mass Communication in regular mode along with Ph.D. Also, it offers BA-JMC (International)In collaboration with Western Sydney University, Australia in1+2 pattern of 1st year in MRIIRS and later years in WSU, Australia.

 

Q-2 What are the eligibility criteria for the programs offered?

 

Ans.The eligibility criteria for our programs are as follows:

 

  • BA-JMC:Pass in 10+2 examination /equivalent examination with at least 50% marks in aggregate in 5 subjects including English as compulsory subject along with 4 subjects with the highest score out of the remaining subjects.
  • BA-JMC(International) 1+2 degree programme in association with Western Sydney University, Austrailia:Pass in 10+2 Examination / Equivalent Examination with at least 50% marks in aggregate in 5 subjects including English as compulsory subject along with 4 subjects with the highest score out of the remaining subjects plus (a) having studied in English Medium from 8th to 12th class or (b) IELTS composite score at 6.0 with individual score not less than 5.5
  • MA-JMC: 50% marks in any stream at Graduation level from a recognized university with pass in English in 10+2

 

Q-3 How the programs are different from other ones and from other universities?

Ans.The programs being offered under this department are basically field oriented. Apart from the classroom lectures, the thrust is mainly given on practical aspects and therefore, become more interesting and absorbing. The students tend to learn every aspect of media and also the art of film making. The Faculty has its own well equipped studio where different programs like panel discussions, group discussions, debates, open house sessions etc are not only organized but recorded which is mainly done by the students. Not only this, the students are also sent to the fields to interview various celebrities, cover various events of importance. In nutshell, the students come out of the university as confident and expert in their fields.

Q-4 Can a student go for higher studies after graduating from Department of J&MC?

Ans. Yes, J&MC degree is as good as the one awarded by any central or state university. A bachelor’s degree holder from this department can also apply for higher studies in any of the Indian or overseas universities.

Q-5 What are the various fields one can work after graduating from journalism?

Ans. Journalism and Mass Communication offers expertise in various fields and is in great demand in today’s times. We offer expertise in various fields like Print journalism, Electronic media, Digital media, Health Communication, Brand Management, Anchoring and Radio Production, Event Management, Media Communication & Research, Film Studies, Media Management, Photojournalism, Advertising and Public Relations.

Q-6 What is the quality of the faculty and what is so innovative in their teaching methodologies?

Ans. The core faculty comprises of distinguished academicians from the best institutions and leading professionals from the Media world with rich industry experience. The faculty lays great emphasis on continuous evaluation by means of well-designed tutorials and practical. Every effort is made to reinforce the concepts taught in the classroom. The faculty members believe in participatory mode of teaching. Apart from teaching, the faculty members have been vigorously pursuing research and have been regularly publishing research papers in various National and International Journals of repute. Faculty members have also attended the Refresher Courses organized by UGC and presented papers in various National & International seminars and Conferences in leading universities and colleges.

Q-7 What kind of grooming programs are offered to the students?

Ans. We organize Personality Development classes to help the students to develop Soft Skills, Career Exploration, Resume Writing, Interviewing Skills and Presentation Skills. We also organize Panel Discussions, News Reading, Mock Parliament, Group Discussions and News Analysis in the studio to make the students industry friendly. We also send our students to the field for reporting. Students are also participating in various programs that are conducted by Radio Manav Rachna.

Q-8 What are the job opportunities after completing the degree in Journalism and Mass Communication?

Ans. The career avenues are many and varied job opportunities in media industry like:
Television: Reporter, Anchor, Producer, Copy Editor, Script Writer, Researcher, Production Executive, Video Jockey. Radio: Radio Jockey / Anchor, News Reader, Reporter, Producer, Program Executive, Script Writer, Copy Writer. Internet & Mobile: Content Writer, Content Designer. Newspaper and Magazine: Reporter/ Correspondent; Feature Writer; Business Writer; Copy editor; Sub-editor; Photographer. Event Management: Event Executive, Event Manager and Event Designer.

Q-9 What is internship?

Ans. An internship is attachment to industry or on a project. Internship is a wonderful opportunity to gain hands-on experience and to learn more about the real-world applications of an academic discipline. We send students to various big media organizations for Internships and the concerned organizations sometimes absorb the students in their respective industry. Student’s performance is a must in this regard.

Q-10 What measures are taken to provide placement to students?

Ans.  MRIIRS has a well-organized placement cell called Corporate Resource Centre which is doing a commendable job year after year. The department has a special placement facilitator who coordinates with the Resource Centre and facilitate placement opportunities to students as per their interest areas. Also, mentoring sessions are being organized at department level for improving the employability skills of the students.
