Guest Lectures

Lecture by Dr. Avtar Matharu, Dy. Director, Green Chemistry Centre of excellence, University of York, U.K.

Green Chemistry 1Dr. Matharu delivered a talk on various aspects of Green Chemistry and its applications in various field.  He discussed reduction or elimination of the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products. Green Chemistry underlies our commitment to potentially harmful technologies by developing alternative syntheses to prevent environmental pollution. He emphasized on few key points:

  • How Green Chemistry may be beneficial to industry
  • Green Chemistry ultimately reduces cost and increases responsibility to the environment, the public and shareholders.
  • Green Chemistry is a cradle to grave approach

Lecture by Dr. Abhiram Prabhu, Member Relations Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), London, North India Section.

Royal Society of ChemistryDr. Prabhu delivered an informative talk about activities of RSC, its membership and facilities offered by society to members. RSC support its members in various ways such as:

  • Keeping knowledge up to date with free access to high quality news and research
  • engage with the chemistry community, sharing  ideas and expertise with like-minded people
  • managing  career and providing practical support when needed
  • As an education professional, explore a wealth of resources, activities and networks and get to know education community.

Talk on Green Chemistry by Prof. R.K. Sharma, Delhi University

Prof. R.K. Sharma, a renowned Green Chemistry Professional from Delhi University, is propaga
ting the concept of Green Chemistry for teaching to the Undergraduate and Post Graduate students by conducting several workshops in different colleges in Delhi and other parts of the country for their faculty members. In his lecture, he dealt with the history and developments taking place in the field of Green Chemistry all over the world. He also discussed several Indian and Global case studies, whereby industries got direct or indirect benefits by adoption of Green processes. He emphasized the role of chemists and engineers for exploring new molecules and alternate processes so that waste is minimized and energy consumption is optimized.

Talk on Recent Advances In Bio-Fuels by Dr. D.K. Tuli

Dr. D. K. Tuli, a well-known expert in the field and Former Executive Director (Alternate Energy), IOCL R&D Centre, Faridabad. Dr. Tuli has a vast experience in the area of Alternate Energy including Bio-Fuels and is presently spearheading the research activities at State-of-Art ‘DBT-IOC Centre for Advanced Bio-Energy Research’ as its Executive Director. This Research Centre  has been established at Indian Oil R&D Centre, Faridabad in partnership with Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India at a cost of  about 60 crore rupees.

Bio-Fuels 1    Bio-Fuels

He discussed about the importance of alternate fuels in today’s context and research work being done on 1st , 2nd and 3rd Generation Bio-Fuels in India, US and Europe. He presented the world scenario of Bio-Ethanol and Bio-Diesel production and their usage in transport sector. Dr. Tuli presented the National Bio-Fuel Policy and India’s Vision for its implementation.

He concluded his talk by saying “Environmental reasons will drive research efforts towards carbon neural transportation fuels.”

Lecture on “Computational Chemistry” by Dr. Kishor Arora

An Invited Talk on Computational Chemistry was organized by Chemistry Department, Manav Rachna University. Dr. Arora has a vast experience in the area of Computational Chemistry including 3D QSAR studies and IR simulation.

Dr. Arora started his Lecture with the current trends in Chemical synthesis and explained four different methods in science: Observational, Experimental, Theoretical and Computational. He explained that Computational science allows scientists to build models that allow predictions of what might happen in the lab. He discussed about various molecular modeling techniques such as empirical, semi-empirical, abinitio/DFT etc.

He discussed about applications of various softwares available for molecular modeling such as MOPAC, GAMESS  and Hyperchem. He concluded his talk with the remark that by the incorporation of Computational Chemistry we can move towards Green and Clean Chemistry.

The lecture was well attended by the director, deans and faculty members from Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics Departments and also Engineering Branches from MRCE. The lecture was very interesting, informative and interactive. There were no. of queries from the audience especially from Prof. Y.P. Singh of CSE Deptt.,  Prof. Naveen Prakash, Drirector, MRCE, and  faculty members of  Physics Deptt., which were replied satisfactorily by Dr. Arora.

EXPERT LECTURE ON THE “HADOOP ARCHITECTURE”

The Department of CST organized an expert lecture on 31st May, 2014, Saturday. The expert lecture on the “Hadoop Architecture” was delivered by Mr. Devesh Goel from IBM.

HADOOP ARCHITECTUREApache Hadoop is an open-source software framework for storage and large-scale processing of data-sets on clusters of hardware. Hadoop is an Apache project being built and used by a global community of contributors and users. Hadoop is designed to efficiently process large volumes of information by connecting many commodity computers together to work in parallel. Hadoop ties together smaller and reasonably priced machines together into a single cost-effective compute cluster. Performing computation on large volumes of data has been done before, usually in a distributed setting. What makes Hadoop unique is its simplified programming model which allows the user to quickly write and test distributed systems, and its efficient, automatic distribution of data and work across machines. In a Hadoop cluster, data is distributed to all the nodes of the cluster as it is being loaded in.
