Ms. Sharon Lowen apprised Media students about Dance and Literature in a recently organized webinar
Department of English, Faculty of Media Studies and Humanities, MRIIRS organized a webinar on Communicating through Dance and Literature recently. The event provided a platform for discussion on nature, scope and function of literature and creative art. It went on exploring the relationship between literature and dance- two important means of communication. Ms. Sharon Lowen, the internationally acclaimed artist of Odissi, Manipuri and Chahau was the resource person of this Webinar.
Ms. Lowen, in her speech, established a parallel between dance and literature, which are among the most important forms of creative art. Both dance and literature perform the primary function of communication. Concentrating basically on Indian dance traditions, Ms. Lowen brought in the aesthetics of ‘Rasa’ as mentioned in NatyaShastra of Bharatmuni, the primary book on theory and aesthetics of Indian performing arts. Abhinaya or acting is the integral part of dance. Hence, the communication goes straight to the heart.
The webinar was quite enthralling and it left the participants almost spellbound. The video clips used by Ms. Lowen were the extracts of her own performances on different platforms and were received well by the participants. Overall, it was a well organised event that stirred ideas and thoughts in the audience.
