Invited Lecture on Olefin Polymers by Dr Shashikant of IOCL R&D
An Invited Lecture on Olefin Polymers: Materials of Choice for Industries was organized by the Department of Chemistry, Manav Rachna University. Dr. SHASHIKANT, who is presently working as Scientist Emeritus at Indian Oil Research and Development Centre, Faridabad, delivered the lecture which was attended by students of M.Sc. (Chemistry) and B.Sc. (Hons) and Faculty of Chemistry Department. Faculty from other departments also attended the lecture.
Dr. A. K. Gupta, Proctor and Professor, Department of Chemistry welcomed the guest with a sapling and introduced the speaker. Dr. Shashikant, Former General Manager (Petrochemicals), IOCL, R&D is a distinguished speaker and an expert having 37 years of vast experience in Polymers and Petrochemicals. He started his lecture by highlighting the importance of polymers in day-to-day life with a special emphasis on olefin polymers particularly polyethylene and polypropylene.
By 2020, the production of thermoplastics will be more than 300 million metric tons and the demand for commodity polymers – LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP will be approximately 160 Million MT, he informed. He discussed the types of polyethylenes, structure of polypropylenes, their characteristics and their typical thermal and mechanical properties. He elaborated in great detail on the usage of these olefin polymers in Automobile, Packaging, Textile, Geo-Textile and Electronics Industries and house hold appliances.
This was indeed a very enriching lecture and beneficial to the students as well as faculty. At the end, a vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Megha Mittal, HOD (Chemistry).
