Workshop conducted by Internal Quality Assurance Cell

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Manav Rachna University organized a workshop on ‘Teaching Learning Process – A reflective approach’ on 18th March, 2017.  Dr. Babita Prashar, Head of the Department of Education and her team consisting of Mr. Ankit and Ms. Shreyasi conducted the Workshop. The Workshop was aimed at enhancing the qualities in a teacher. It started with the interaction regarding listing up of the qualities in our favorite teachers. The significance of being reflective in our teaching methodology was discussed. The focus was on the techniques or methods of incorporating a reflective approach in our entire teaching learning process. This approach may be incorporated through redefining the content, new pedagogy or through better assessment methods. The Workshop also addressed the issues of developing better skills of explaining a topic, skill of questioning and also skill of stimulating in different situations in class. The tools to be possessed to become a good teacher include passion to learn, teach, good knowledge of the topic and the use of good pedagogy. The problems that every teacher faces nowadays, which may affect the quality of teaching and the methods of coping with them, were an important point of focus.

The Workshop was very interactive and the participants from all the departments enjoyed te session. The Workshop was very fruitful specially for the teachers who have just stepped into their profession.

 

MRU-IQAC Expert Talk on “Quality Improvement in Examination System of the University”

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell, MRU organized an “Expert Talk” on the topic ”Quality Improvement in Examination System of the University”. Prof. B.D. Pathak, Dean Examinations delivered the talk on Saturday, 4th March, 2017. Prof. B.D. Pathak is PhD from IIT Delhi. He served as head Mechanical engineering and Dean Academic at Delhi Technological University.

Faculty members from all the departments of the university attended the talk. Prof. B.D. Pathak spoke about the process of conduct of examination and the evaluation system. He discussed various issues regarding discipline of students during examination, actions to be taken in case of misconduct of student while appearing for examination. He threw light on the grading and distribution of marks. Prof. B.D. Pathak also discussed on the design of a good question paper. In his talk he included suggestions on distribution and weightage of marks in a question paper, length of the question paper and its syllabus coverage.

Faculty members found it interesting and participated actively in the discussion. The session ended with a healthy discussion among all the participants. Various points regarding conduct of practical examination were put forward and discussed.

The occasion was graced by the presence of Dean Engineering and Proctor MRU. The session ended with a positive note. In the feedback, the faculty appreciated the steps taken by the University for Improvement in examination system.

 

Workshop on “Student Feedback System in University”

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Manav Rachna University organized a workshop for developing a quality feedback system in the university. Prof. (Dr.) Meenakshi Khurana conducted the workshop in a very interactive and interesting manner on 18th Feb, 2017.

The focus of the workshop was to identify the major points of attention in the feedback forms and the process of conducting feedbacks at different levels of University, Programme and courses. The workshop was attended by Deans of faculties, all the Heads of the Departments along with their representative faculty members and course co-coordinators. The members of the feedback committee were also present. Each of the members identified their own feedback criteria according to their respective roles and responsibilities in the university. The university feedback was discussed first. This covered the feedback points to be included for the provision of facilities at university level, including sports, curriculum development, student welfare measures, library, infrastructure facilities etc. The frequency of execution of each of the feedback was discussed. The emphasis was also given in developing the interest of stakeholders and motivating them to give sufficient time in writing the feedback. The group agreed that dissemination of feedback process and results plays an important part in improving the quality of education offered and the overall experience of a student at the university. It was also discussed and thus could help in finding the correcting measures to be taken for the improvement of the quality of knowledge and overall development of students.

 

Lecture by Mr. Ravi Virk and Mr. Prateek Verma of  “Art of Living Foundation”

Over the last 27 years, the Art of Living has been educating people in over 146 countries on leading a happier and healthier life. Mr. Prateek and Mr. Ravi Virk who work as volunteers of YES + (Youth Empowerment Skill) program of Art of Living were invited to deliver a talk on “Leading a Stress Free Life” Mr. Ravi discussed on causes of stress in life. The participants were encouraged to discuss their stress related problems on “Stress in Teaching”. Stress is found to be part of the day-to-day lives of teachers. Mr. Ravi threw light on how stress effects our life and how can we overcome. Understanding the cause of stress helps the teachers plan to combat the problems and challenges they face. This leads to a better quality of life with less stress, making teachers healthier, happier and potentially even more successful at the teaching profession. He demonstrated with examples, how is breathing related to different moods of a person. He guided the participants to explore the importance of breathing in our day to day behavior.

Mr. Prateek discussed on the control of thoughts. He demonstrated the controlling power of mind through meditation exercises. He also used some interesting exercises to check our thought process. He discussed how being happy depends on our power to control the thought process going in our minds. The session was very interesting to all the participants. It would hopefully prove to have a very positive impact both spiritually and intellectually.
He also advised interested faculty members to join for a 3-day workshop planned in MRIU/MRU in September, 2016, whereby they can understand the importance of “Sudarshan Kriya” and practice the same. This will help them in effective teaching and managing their emotions and building confidence.

 

Lecture by Prof. B. D. Pathak, Dean Examinations, MRU

Evaluation being an important tool of maintaining quality in an education system, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Manav Rachna University, organized a lecture session on the Topic “Examination System in MRU: Designing of Question Papers & Evaluation.”

 

Evaluation Strategies

The session was organized on Saturday, the 16th April, 2016 at I Block Auditorium.

Prof. B. Dse. Pathak, Dean (Exam) threw light on the distribution of marks among various components of a course. He threw light on the evaluation strategies formulated for the newly introduced choice based credit system. Along with LTP a new component O has been introduced. Workshop courses introduced in each semester add value to hands on practice. He also threw light on the evaluation system of a Ph.D programme. Professor B.D.Pathak spoke about designing of question papers, grading system and scheme of evaluation.

Sh. Rajesh Tandon, Dy Registrar (Acad & Exam) also briefed the audience about the conduct of examination, duties of invigilators, superintendents, Asst. Superintendent, floor superintendent and flying squad. He discussed regarding actions to be taken in case of misconduct during examination.

The IQAC session was informative and useful and shall promote good ethics and values in the evaluation system. Session was attended by 90 faculty members of MRU.

 

Lecture by Prof. V. K. Mahna, Pro Vice Chancellor, MRU

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Manav Rachna University, organized a session on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at I Block Auditorium.

Prof. (Dr.) V. K. Mahna, Pro Vice Chancellor, Manav Rachna University was invited as a speaker for the session. Prof. V. K. Mahna spoke on the Topic “Qualitative Changes Envisaged Ahead”.

 

Logical Thinking and Quality of Teaching

10Prof. V.K. Mahna stressed on the logical thinking and quality of teaching. He also illustrated simple solutions to complex problems by using suitable software. The lecture session was attended by the faculty members from all the departments. Deans and directors from MRU graced the occasion by their presence. The session was interesting and useful to all. Along with the discussion on quality enhancing skills for better quality, Prof. V. K. Mahna also discussed some wonderful techniques and tricks from discrete mathematics and their implementation.

 

Report of the Guest Talk on the topic of “R&D Outcome Based Business Development”                 

11Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at MRCE organized a Guest talk on the topic of R&D outcome based business development on Friday December 12th 2014 in I block Auditorium. At 2.00 pm. This cell is committed towards activities for continuous improvement in quality teaching and learning and the same is possible only if the academicians are involved in the research activities. IQAC organized this guest talk with a specific purpose to stimulate the faculty members towards research and development related outcome from all the academic activities.The session was facilitated by Dr. S V Rama Gopal, Chief Scientist, Aspheric Group, Optical Devices & Systems & Scientist-In-charge, Business Initiatives & Project Planning, CSIR – CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS ORGANISATION (CSIR-CSIO), Chandigarh.

During the discussion, Dr. Rama Gopal discussed about different resources required to run the system and said that the science and the technology are twin engines of the industrial and economic growth of any country. He said that no research is free from activities (2)business and Industry. He further put emphasis on the purpose of the research by our faculty members. It has been observed that the faculty members are involved in the research activities however there is scope for the results from the R&D initiatives such as development of the prototype and then look for the possibility of usage of a particular model in the market. He emphasized that the entrepreneurial initiatives should be linked with the R&D outcomes and it require the collaborative effort between researchers and other experts in the Industry thus a researcher should not confined to the boundaries of an institution and explore the possibility of better usage of R&D outcomes. He also shared some live examples of his life to make the session live and connected with the audience well.

Report of the Guest Talk on the topic of Resources, Research and Rewards: are we approaching it right?”

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at MRCE organized a Guest talk on the topic of Resources, Research and Rewards: are we approaching it right? on Friday October 17th 2014 in I block Auditorium. At 11.30 am. As the cell is committed towards activities for continuous improvement in quality teaching and learning and the same is possible only if the academicians are involved in the research activities. IQAC organized this guest talk with a specific purpose to sensitize and stimulate the faculty members towards utilizing the available resources and carry forward their research activities.

14The session was facilitated by Dr. Arti Kashyap Associate Professor at IIT Mandi. Currently heading UHL (uplifting Hilly Livelyhood) center at IIT Mandi, funded by DST and Chair person-women Cell. She is PhD in physics from University of Roorkee in 1996, Postdoc at UNL, Lincoln, NE, USA, Visiting Scientist at IFW Germany. She is recipient of Simons Associateship award of ICTP, Italy and authored about 60+ research publications along with few books and magazine articles.

During the discussion, Dr. Kashyap Shared various reasons due to which a faculty should be involved in research activities. She discussed about various types of research possible for us and the ways to do the same. She further made audience aware about the most important resource and whether we are approaching right towards it. She also discussed about different rewards associated with the research activities and she further invited different researchers to collaborate with the Faculty members and IIT Mandi and other such platforms where the collaborative efforts can be made better fruitful.

The session was attended by the faculty from all the departments of MRCE; they appreciated the session and now look forward to have some collaborations after they complete their level of preparatory work at their end.

 

FDP: ‘Developing Quality Course Material’

19With the starting of new M. Tech. program in Electronics & Communication Engineering and enhancement of seats in existing B. Tech. programs, a large number of new faculty members joined the institute this year. Therefore, it was important to induct these faculty members and apprise them of the institutional method of preparing teaching learning material. The program aimed at enabling the participating faculty members to look at a course as a product to be designed and develop the same with a specific objective and outcome. Program schedule included a series of lectures by Prof. Meenakshi S Khurana, Coordinator IQAC and workshops by senior faculty members on developing course descriptions; designing assessment tools and evaluation; Blooms taxonomy and developing higher learning competencies etc.. The workshops were followed by presentations by the participants. More than 90 participants designed and presented their course materials.

Outcome Based Education

The program was scheduled from 22nd to 24th July and was inaugurated by Dr. O P Bhalla, Chief Patron, Manav 20Rachna Educational Institutions. Prof. Naveen Prakash, Director Principal MRCE, welcomed the chief guest and all the participants. In his welcome address Prof. Prakash highlighted the requirements of the Washington Accord and its implications on the Indian technical education system. He apprised the participants about the international movement to outcome based education and the greater accountability of institutions in terms of producing globally relevant human resources. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Bhalla congratulated the faculty members for their contemporary and global approach to teaching learning process. He pledged increased support to research activities, so that the developments in research labs gets translated into exposure of the students to the same in their class rooms without much time lag.

 

Faculty Seminar on Attendance Monitoring System and Course Coordination Processes

IQAC, as part of its initiatives towards Quality Enhancement at MRCE, modified the Course Coordination and Attendance Submission and Monitoring Processes at MRCE. The modified processes were presented to the faculty members of MRCE on 17th February, 2014 at the I Block Auditorium in separate slots for the Morning and Evening shift faculty members. Ms. Meena Kapahi, member IQAC, presented the Attendance Submission and Monitoring Process and Ms. Rinku Dixit, member IQAC, presented the Course Coordination Process. The process guidelines and necessary annexures are available at the MRCE Intranet for ready reference.

Seminar on “Intellectual Property Right

IQAC organized a Seminar on Intellectual Property Right (IPR) on Saturday 19th October 2013. IQAC is committed towards the organization of workshops and Seminars on quality related themes and retrieval of information on various quality parameters of higher education and best practices followed by other institutions.

The session was facilitated by Mr. R.K. Gupta who is presently the Advisor to the Innovation Protection Unit (erstwhile Intellectual Property Management Division) of The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. Mr. Gupta shared his rich experience on various aspects of IP protection particularly patenting of CSIR inventions nationally & internationally.

During the discussion the status of the efforts made so far by the academic institutions in India in creating and establishing IPR activities was discussed. The discussion also illustrated as to how CSIR, India, has played a key role by becoming a dominant player in filing and securing patents in India and abroad and has brought about a paradigm shift in IP processes in the country.

The seminar was organized with a purpose to create awareness and stimulate the faculty at MRCE towards Intellectual Property Rights. The seminar was attended by the faculty from all the departments of MRCE; they appreciated the session and now look forward to have more information on process related to patents and copyrights.

SWOT Analysis at MRCE

SWOT analysis was conducted at MRCE on 21st September 2013. In this study a tool in the form of a questionnaire was used in the analysis and the same was filled by the faculty members of MRCE.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

  • To find out various strength & weaknesses
  • To explore various opportunities and threats
  • To find out facts and figures for further decision making

METHODOLOGY ADOPTED

The study was focused to get an idea about various areas of improvement and the strength domain to sustain the best practices. For the purpose of internal environmental scanning, the questions related to admissions, course curriculum, academics & its delivery process, faculty and the staff related variables such as research, Industry interface, Alumni & their contribution HR practices and operational budget related questions were taken into account.

Apart from it the questionnaire had some open ended questions where the faculty members were asked to write about the opportunities and threats they foresee towards the organization. As a part of the SWOT analysis the faculty members were given a question which was developed after reviewing the literature.

For this study the questionnaire was designed and uploaded on Google Doc.. For the purpose of the study, the sessions were arranged in various groups in which the department wise feedback was registered after a presentation about the significance of the study and the instrument. The responses collected were put to analyze. The responses were compiled on Department, Designation & experience wise.

The analysis included the average means of the responses. The profiles of the respondents are given below:

WORKSHOP ON PG PROGRAMS TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS & QUALITY ISSUES

IQAC organized a workshop on ‘PG Programs: Teaching Learning Process and Quality Issues’ on April 18th 2014. During the workshop brainstorming was carried out among the participants. The objective of the workshop was to (1) Differentiate between UG and PG program objectives and their delivery mechanism (2) Identify tools for effective development of targeted attributes in PG students (3) Share with the group the multidisciplinary skills of individual faculty members.

In this workshop all the senior faculty members with doctoral degrees from different departments participated and shared their view about various graduate attributes necessary for PG students. After finalizing the Graduate attributes the faculty members were divided in different groups as per their specializations. In the groups a sample course was taken by the group members and the group worked together to identify various tools so that the same can be efficiently deployed during teaching learning process.

WORKSHOP ON “DEVELOPING RUBRICS”

IQAC conducted a workshop for Faculty of MBA program (PG course) on the topic of “Developing Rubrics” for PG courses on Monday September 22, 2014 at 3.00 pm in IG 03. The session was delivered by Dr. Meenakshi Khurana, Coordinator- IQAC, where she started the session with a discussion on two words i.e. assessment and evaluation. She shared with the faculty members that Rubric is a tool to articulate expectations for a work assigned in a course. It can be developed for any assignment/activity by which student is asked to demonstrate the learning.

During the session the faculty members participated in the discussion and they were asked to evaluate a case study without understanding Rubric and after understanding the Rubric. With this exercise the faculty members were exposed to the benefits of the tool. The participants also discussed and developed the Rubric for one of the exercise i.e. Mock interview for MBA first year for the subject Business Communication Skills. The said way of evaluating the student’s performance will also increase the transparency and showcase fairness of evaluation.

REPORT ON FACULTY INDUCTION PROGRAM

IQAC conducted a Faculty Induction Program for newly joined teaching staff at MRCE. The session was organized on Friday July 25th 2014 in which all new faculty members were exposed to institutional functioning and processes during full day session.

The session started at 9 o’clock with the address of Director Principal Dr. Naveen Prakash. In his welcome address, he shared the vision, mission of the institute, the work environment of MRCE and his expectations from the faculty members. After Directors’s address Dean P.G. & Research Dr. A.K. Gupta shared research practices and Dean Academics (UG) Dr. B.M. Bahal shared Academic activities at MRCE respectively. Dean Industry Interaction Prof. R.P. Sambhi discussed Industry Interface activities and Dean Students Ms. Sangita Banga explained the practices related to student’s affair at MRCE.

The information about examination cell at MRCE was shared by Controller of Examination Dr. D.K. Sharma where as the session about Library facilities was taken by Library chairperson Mr. Sanjay Taneja. The Registrar MRCE Mr. Arun Puri shared the HR policy and practices with the audience. After the tea break, Dean Academics (Auto.) Dr. Meenakshi Khurana delivered a session on Outcome based education and Ms. Hanu Bhardwaj Member IQAC shared course coordination process with the new members in the institute.

Post Lunch sessions were the workshops on attendance monitoring process and feedback management system. These sessions were delivered by Ms. Rinku Dixit member IQAC and Ms. Sanjana Malhotra HOD- ECE in the computer lab at L block. The entire day was full of exposure for the new members in MRCE family. The Faculty induction program was coordinated by Dr. Lata Singh General Secretary IQAC and the vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Meena Kapahi member IQAC.
