About School
The school of Applied Sciences and Mathematics functions as an Academic Facilitation Unit within FET in which courses like Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Chemistry, Holistic Wellness & Life Skills, Professional Communication and Environmental studies are offered primarily to 1st Year B.Tech students. Some of the courses are also offered during the higher semester which includes Numerical Methods and Optimization Techniques, Industrial Management & Entrepreneurship, Quantitative Aptitude, Quantitative Aptitude and Personality Development, Soft Skills and Foreign Languages in addition to electives. Beside these courses, the departments under this school namely Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry and Department of Mathematics also offer postgraduate Programmes M. Tech. in Data Analytics and M.Sc. in Mathematics & Computational Science.
Courses offered in these departments build foundations for engineering knowledge and skills in the respective disciplines. Applied Physics provides a sound science base for all engineering disciplines during I and II semester. Industrial Chemistry has contributed significantly to engineering fields like polymer technology, material science, industrial waste management etc. Environmental Studies sensitize the students regarding the current environmental issues and awareness regarding the ways to protect and create a culture of green environment. Applied Mathematics is all pervasive and no field of engineering is complete without it. Students are therefore given a thorough grounding in Mathematics during first year and advanced subjects in subsequent years.
On the whole, the students in the first year are trained to explore, to innovate, to analyze and to acquaint themselves with the applications of basic sciences in engineering and technological areas. The students are individually encouraged to perform experiments and handle the instruments. The departments have well equipped laboratories with modern facilities including R&D lab. In addition, the first year students under the guidance and control of the Applied Sciences are exposed to the following laboratories of the other departments, namely, Computer Programmeming Lab, Computer Aided Drafting, Workshop Practices-I and Workshop Practices-II.
All the departments have highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty which helps in creating an exciting academic and research oriented environment. In order to inculcate research aptitude, skills and synergy among first year B. Tech students and faculty, Workshops and Conferences are conducted from time to time in the departments. From the first year itself, the institute tries to infuse self confidence in the students and help them to develop the skills and demeanor of lifelong learning so that they become academically competent and capable of facing the future with resilience and optimism.
