Webinar on International Arbitration in the Commonwealth a Gamble or a Chance
Webinar on ‘International Arbitration in the Commonwealth – A Gamble or a Chance’ Faculty of Law, MRU and International Education Centre (IEC), MREI presented a webinar on ‘International Arbitration in the Commonwealth – A Gamble or a Chance’ recently. The session started with a brief introduction of the speaker Ms. Petra Butler by Colonel Girish Sharma. She is a Professor at the Victoria University of Wellington, Co-Director of the Centre for the Small States, and the Visiting Professor at the Queen Mary University of London. The speaker started by talking about the compatibility of Indian laws with the concept of arbitration and especially emphasized the recent amendments to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. She then deliberated upon the importance of International Commercial Arbitration in contemporary times, its underlying issues, and the ways in which the commonwealth countries may make positive contributions to International Commercial Arbitration. Later, the speaker offered some quantitative findings to the participants including data regarding types of rules, Arbitrator’s preferred seat, party’s preferred seat, and preferred method of B2B dispute resolutions.
