Hands-on Learning in Thermal Engineering Lab- Assembling & Disassembling
While studying the ‘IC Engine’ course, students were taken to Thermal Engineering Lab and four groups were formed. The first two groups dismantled the Engine while the other two groups assembled it.
The necessary oral guidelines and procedure of Engine assembly and disassembly were given during the on-hand exposure by the faculty. The students were then given tips on Engine troubleshooting and Preventive maintenance. The workshop was appreciated by the students and was a good learning experience, as they got an opportunity to develop their skill set and practice on the most important and complex aggregation of an IC Engine.
Dissection involving “disassembling” and “assembling” of engineering artifacts or processes act as a “hands-on” active learning component of the Mechanical Engineering curriculum. Incorporation of such activities in a teaching-learning process in the context of desired educational objectives and outcomes, is our continuous endeavour. Here, students understand the process through observation in terms of functionality, form, physical properties, manufacturability and assembly.
