FAQs For Faculty of Media Studies & Humanities – English

Q-1. What are the courses under the Dept. of English?
Ans. The Dept. of English offers both the undergraduate and post graduate courses. The programmes offered are -B.A. (Hons.) English, M.A. (English) and Ph.D (English). The syllabi of the different course are planned carefully, comprising all the schools, periods and genres of English literature. The entire stream of English literature from the age of Chaucer to the Modern Age comes under the purview of the syllabi. The scope of the study has also been broadened by incorporating The Classical Greek literature, Indian Literature, African and Continental Literature. The syllabi of various courses can match well with those prescribed in the reputed universities such as Delhi University, JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia. Competent and experienced faculty members are available in the department to supervise research scholars for Ph.D. course. Adequate infrastructural facilities have been provided for smooth running of the courses.

Q-2. How can I obtain an Admission Brochure?
Ans. Admission Brochure can be obtained through the following methods:

  • Download from the MRIU website.
  • Obtain by hand.

Q-3. How and where is the Admission/Application Form to be submitted?
Ans. A Student has to submit the application form online using the Scratch Card and Brochure Number provided with the Admission Brochure or directly using debit/credit card.

He/she should then secure two hard copies of the submitted application form. One copy should be kept for self reference and the other is to be submitted to MRIU at the time of Physical Counseling.

Q-4 What is English Honours Course? How is it different from the B.A pass course?
Ans. B.A. (Hons.) English runs into three years of two semesters each. It gives the students an insight into the basic tenets of English literature. The course is aimed at developing a genuine interest in the subject. Its objective is to broaden the horizon of the students so as to perceive human life and conditions in its correct perspective.

It differs from the “Pass Course” in terms of syllabi content and extensive study of English Literature. It focuses more on the specialized study of English Literature rather than giving general knowledge and information about other subjects and areas of Arts and Humanities.

Q-5 What is the scope of B.A (Hons.) English?
Ans. The scope and demand of this course is vast and varied. The students, after graduation, can pursue higher studies and excel themselves in the field of Academics and Research. They can also compete for the higher competitive examinations including the Civil Services Exam. It has been observed that the students with literature background have better chances of getting selected for the Civil Services. Besides, they can pursue their careers in the areas of Management and Journalism.

Q-6 What is the importance of this course?
Ans. It has been observed in the recent past that the students with a good command over English have been in great demand in the media industry. Particularly, there has been an upper trend among the students to take up a career in Journalism. The best part in this course is that the faculty of Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) is also involved in taking classes for B.A (Hons.) English and helping in enhancing their communication skills as also making them aware of the latest trends in the media industry. Besides, the student with a good command over English are sought after keenly by the corporate world.

Q-7 What is the minimum eligibility for admission into B.A (Hons.) English course?
Ans. A student needs to score a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of best 5 subjects at 10+2 in any stream with pass in English.

Q-8 What kind of grooming do the programs offer to the students?
Ans. We organize personality development classes to help the students to promote their soft skills, career exploration, resume writing, interviewing skills and presentation skills. We also organize panel discussions, news reading, mock parliament, group discussions and news analysis for the overall development of their body, mind and soul. Work-shops on various related topics and technical aspects of syllabi are organized. We also, from time to time, arrange guest lectures by renowned teachers and scholars of the field. We have tie-ups with the media industry.

Q-9 What is the quality of the Faculty of English Department?
Ans. The Faculty of the Department is highly experienced and qualified, in keeping with the U.G.C norms and regulations. Their Ph.D. dissertations are from varied areas from the Classical to the Modern Age. A fair number of books as well as research papers go to the credit of and Research articles published in reputed Journals and Magazines. Undoubtedly, the Department of English has an excellent teaching faculty supported by the visiting faculty from DU and other leading universities. Our faculty has a vast exposure to knowledge and expertise from the world of research and development.

Q-10 What type of facilities are provided to the students by the University?
Ans. The Department of English provides a good infrastructure that includes A.C classrooms fitted with overhead projectors. We also have the facility of a studio for recording, evaluating and improving the public speaking skills of the students.

The Department has a well stocked library with a large number of books in different areas of English language, literature and soft-skills. The library also subscribes to a good number of both online, print journals and magazines.

Q-11 Will the amount be refunded if we don’t take admission?
Ans. Refund of Fees is governed in accordance with guidelines laid down in UGC letter No: D.O.1-3/2007 (CPP-II), Details are available on website www.manavrachna.edu.in.

Q-12 Do we need to deposit the original certificates at the time of admission?
Ans. No, there is no need to submit original certificates but a candidate must produce original certificates/documents on the day of admission for verification, failing which the candidate shall not be considered for the same.

Q-13 What are the documents to be produced at the time of admission?
Ans. For B.A.(Hons.) Eng -12th original mark sheet, Date of Birth certificate, address proof, Medical Fitness Certificate, and character certificate from institution last attended. For M.A.(Hons.) Eng – Mark-sheet of Graduation,12th original mark sheet, Date of Birth certificate, address proof, Medical Fitness Certificate, and character certificate from institution last attended.

Q-14 What measures are taken to assist the students in finding employment?
Ans. MRIU has a well organized placement cell called Corporate Resource Centre which is doing a commendable job year after year. We conduct special coaching sessions for improving the employability skills of the students. We have a good rapport with other educational institutions for the exposure of the students to their academic and research environment.

Q-15 For how many days does the University work in a week?
Ans. Six days a week, from Monday to Saturday.

Q-16 Does the institution assist the students in processing educational loan applications?
Ans. A separate cell has been set-up for providing assistance in education loan from Bank. Also representatives of various banks remain available in campus during physical counseling days.
